The aim of the European Virus Archive project is to create and mobilise a European network of high calibre centres with the appropriate expertise, to collect, amplify, characterise, standardise, authenticate, distribute and track, mammalian and other exotic viruses. The EVA project is establishing a web-based catalogue to advertise and distribute viruses in the collection as well as associated products. In addition the EVA network also produce associated reagents on demand, to laboratories throughout Europe and also worldwide.

  • Virus Family: Flaviviridae
  • Virus Genus: Flavivirus
  • Virus Name: West Nile virus
  • Strain: NY 1999
  • Lineage: Viruses»ssRNA viruses»ssRNA positive-strand viruses, no DNA stage»Flaviviridae»Flavivirus»Japanese encephalitis virus group

  • Related information on ICTVDB >> ref: 00.026.0.01.051.
  • Taxonomic Information on NCBI Taxonomy >> Taxonomic ID: 11082
  • Host Type: Virus infects during its life cycle arthropod and vertebrate hosts. Virus has an enzootic cycle and is transmitted from arthropod vector to birds and arthropod vector to an incidental incompetent host (dead end host). Virus infects Homo sapiens (human).
  • Morphology: Virions consist of an envelope and a nucleocapsid. Virus capsid is enveloped. Virions are spherical and measure 40-50 nm in diameter. The envelope has surface projections. Surface projections are small spikes surrounded by a prominent fringe. Capsid/nucleocapsid is round and exhibits polyhedral symmetry. The core is isometric and has a diameter of 25-30 nm. The capsid shells of virions are composed of a single layer.
  • Segmented Genome: NO
  • Nucleic Acid: Thegenome is monomeric; not segmented and contains a single molecule of linear, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA. The complete genome is 11000 nucleotides long. Sequence can be accessed from EBI-EMBL and GenBank. The RNA-1 is fully sequenced, complete sequence is 11000 nucleotides long. Sequence has the accession number [M12294]. The 5'-end of the genome has a methylated nucleotide cap. The 3'-terminus has no poly (A) tract.
