The Biomedical Center staff participated in discovering the first cases of HIV infection in the USSR and isolating the first Russian HIV strains, as well as in establishing the HIV infection surveillance system. The scientists of the Center cloned complete genomes of the Russian HIV isolates and determined their nucleotide sequences. They developed the first Russian candidate DNA-vaccine against subtype A of HIV.
